Brand Loyalty Starts Young: Lessons from 14-Year-Old Entrepreneurs

At Vast Strategies, we believe great marketing starts with a great reputation, and there’s no better way to build that than with exceptional customer service. Funny enough, one of the best real-life examples of this principle is unfolding right in my own neighborhood, and in my own home, thanks to my 14-year-old son, Jacob.

Last year, Jacob and his friend, Griffin, who’s been like a brother to him since they were three, started a simple lawn mowing business. They didn’t have a budget for a logo, but what they did have was a strong work ethic, a commitment to doing what they promised, and a heart for helping others. They offered reasonable rates, showed up on time, mowed lawns with care, weed-whacked, and even cleaned up with leaf blowers. In short, they went above and beyond what most other lawnmowing teenagers would have offered.

The result? Many neighbors paid them more than what they quoted, and by the next season, word of mouth had taken over. They were amazed at how many new customers reached out based purely on their reputation.


This season, Andy (my husband), Griffin's parents, and I have taken things a step further. We’re teaching them about expenses and business basics. Last year, we covered their gas, but this year, they’re solely responsible for it. All of a sudden (wouldn’t you know it!), they’re understanding what profit and loss really means. They’re realizing that in order to grow, they may need to raise their prices to account for costs.


Even better? My son saved his earnings and invested in his own tractor this year. This is something that will save him both time and money in the long run. That’s smart scaling in action!


He also recently launched a car wash and detailing business, and he has already gained three new customers — all through referrals. If that wasn’t enough, he’s started a 3D printing business, too. He’ll definitely be busy this summer!
